Hey guys! I just got done reading William Shakespeare’s Othello. I absolutely loved this book, and, as my maniacal self does, loved the character Iago. Not soon afterward, I realized that that is the same name of the parrot from Disney’s Aladdin. The treachery of this character is amazing, and the main character never even sees it coming! The man was a genius, and even though he was the antagonist, he wasn’t really a villain! The advice that he gives is good advice, he’s just lucky enough to have all of his ideas fail, which eventually leads to (Spoiler Alert!!!) his demise.
Another of my favorite characters is the Moor himself, Othello. Coming from an area where there were more blacks than whites, I was stung almost as much as he was when all of those racist comments were made. “Black sheep”? Not cool! And he never actually did anything wrong, save keep Iago around. Even though the man is deviously charming, he is a complete snake.
Now on to two of my least favorite characters. First and foremost is Brabantio. When I picture Brabantio, it wasn’t as a “respected signior”, I saw him as someone from down south, drinking beer and swinging around a gun. Now, I can see where he is coming from, not knowing where his daughter is, getting married without his permission, but still; those things that you said are horrible. Look at me, talking to book characters… I must be absolutely crazy.
My second least favorite character is Roderigo. Now don’t start on the bleeding-heart, emotionally-unstable bit, I’ve heard it too many times. Roderigo was just a sniveling, whining coward who didn’t want to take things in his own hands.
These are my thoughts on a few of the characters from Othello. What do you think? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll see you guys later.
